ActivePresenter as a built-in facility to take screenshots. It is not a key feature of this ultimate tool, but you’re still surprised, for sure.

Taking screenshots with ActivePresenter is a lot easy. You can take screenshots of a window, an object, the full screen aka your desktop, and an application or a region of your screen. You’re allowed to:

  • Edit screenshots after capturing by adding shapes, text, cropping, blurring, etc.
  • Edit screenshots taken by pressing the PrtScn (PRINT SCREEN) key or by other tools such as the Snipping tool.

To take screenshots, open the Annotations tab > Screenshot. Then, select either of the four modes to capture what you want. Note that before capturing, you can adjust some screenshot settings by clicking Screenshot > Options. Details about these settings are available at the end of this tutorial.

Capturing the Full Screen

Select the Full Screen mode take screenshots 06 to capture a screenshot of the entire screen of your PC. Right after that, ActivePresenter minimizes its own window and captures whatever visible on your computer screen.

So, be careful to prepare your screen before selecting this mode.

Capturing an Application or a Region

ActivePresenter lets you capture a screenshot of the top-level window of the target application, or a rectangle region of the screen. Take the following steps:

Step 1: Select the Application or Region mode take screenshots 07. Immediately, a target-seeker window (a blue rectangle) and the Take Screenshot dialog appear.

Step 2: Use the target-seeker window and the dialog to specify what and how to capture. Regarding the target-seeker window, you can:

  • Drag and position this window around the target part of the screen.
  • Change the window size by dragging its resizing handles.

The Take Screenshot dialog works as follows:

  • Screenshot Usage: Insert the screenshot as an image to the current slide, and/or as a background image of a new slide.
  • Screenshot Size: Set the size precisely by entering the width and height values in the spin boxes or choosing a preset size.
  • Application: Select an application to capture.
    • Click Fit To Application to resize the blue rectangle to fit into the application window.
    • Or, click Fit To Boundary to resize the application window to fit into the blue rectangle.
  • Wait for: Specify a delay (in seconds). Use this delay to quickly interact with the target application and capture its response.

Step 3: Click Take Screenshot to capture a screenshot.

Note: This screenshot mode shares some options with two recording modes of ActivePresenter. See Recording Video Demos and  Recording Software Simulations for more details.

Saving Screenshots

Right after you take screenshot, ActivePresenter places the screenshot in the current slide. Export it for using and sharing.

To do that, right-click the image and select Export To File…. Specify the file name, file format (PNG, JPG, or BMP), and file location, then click Save to export.

  • The exported screenshot doesn’t include annotations such as shapes, callouts, and text (because they are separate objects, you export the screenshot only).
  • If you wish to save an entire slide as image, go to the Slide tab > Save Slide as Image. You can even export the entire project as images, go to the Export tab > Images.

Screenshot Options

ActivePresenter provides four options to adjust screenshot settings before capturing. To access these options, click Annotations > Screenshot > Options. Note that the first three options work only when capturing a window at any level.
